What kind of stone is on your stove?
The natural side stones of these Leenders models are made of prisolite: a mixture of concrete and fibers. A material that is robust and intentionally left rough. This makes it characterful yet susceptible to stains. Additionally, prisolite provides delayed warmth that you continue to feel for hours after the fire has gone out.
Fortunately, cleaning is simple—provided you choose the right approach.
Cleaning the side stones: here's how you do it
For cleaning your Leenders stove, specifically the side stones, follow these steps:
- Use fine sandpaper
Soot marks are best removed with fine sandpaper, grit 220 to 400. Gently rub in circular motions over the stain. Do not push hard, but do it with attention.
2. Do not use water or cleaning agents
Prisolite is porous. Liquids can seep into the material and cause permanent stains. Therefore, dry sanding is safest.
3. Let traces live
Not every stain needs to be removed. Small traces give your hearth character. They tell the story of evenings by the fire, cold hands, warm stews. A little patina is allowed.

Maintaining your Leenders fireplace
In addition to cleaning the side stones, it is good to maintain your fireplace annually. Consider:
- Checking the door and glass seals
- Hiring a good chimney sweep
