If you have landed on this page, you are probably looking to replace the rope seal in your stove. But what exactly is a rope seal? Almost all Leenders wood stoves contain two types of seals: a door rope seal and a glass rope seal. In our stoves, these are two different components.
The door rope seal ensures that the stove door closes tightly when you shut it. The glass rope seal prevents air, and therefore warmth or smoke, from escaping into the room along the edges of the glass. Together, these seals make sure there is no leakage from different sides.
If a rope seal is worn, it needs to be replaced. Fortunately, this is something you can do yourself. On this page you will learn why rope seals are so important, when they need replacement and, just as important, how you can replace them yourself.
As mentioned in the introduction, the door rope seal and the glass rope seal provide a reliable closure between the stove door and the appliance. This is important for several reasons. First, it prevents uncontrolled air from entering the combustion chamber. It also ensures that smoke does not escape through the door opening or along the stove glass.
In addition, the rope seals protect the glass. When the stove is in use, the glass expands due to the heat and contracts again while cooling down. The seals absorb these movements and prevent the glass from vibrating or cracking. All this contributes to a stable and clean combustion. It also extends the lifespan of your wood stove.
Has the door rope seal of your stove become hard, shrunken or does it no longer seal properly? Then it is time to replace it. With frequent use, a door rope seal typically lasts two to four years.
A glass rope seal only needs to be replaced when you replace the glass itself. Both the door rope seal and the glass can be replaced by yourself.
In the video below we show you how to replace a door rope seal.
A good preparation makes the job easier. Before you start, make sure you have the correct rope seal and heat resistant adhesive ready. Check our service page to see which door rope seal and adhesive set matches your Leenders stove model.
Gently pull the worn rope seal out of the frame. Then use a small flat screwdriver to remove any adhesive residue. Make sure the frame is clean and free of dust.
Open the adhesive and apply an even layer along the entire frame where the rope seal will be placed.
Place the new rope seal in the frame. Make sure you install it on the correct side. Our seals are cut to the right length. Start in the bottom left corner where the ends are taped together. Once the seal is fully in place, use the flat screwdriver to press it firmly into the frame.
Close the stove door for a few seconds and then open it again. Pull the rope seal outward by about three millimetres along its full length. Leave the door open for at least 24 hours to allow the adhesive to cure properly.
And that is it, you have replaced the door rope seal yourself.
In the following video you can see how to replace the glass of a Leenders stove. The glass rope seal is replaced as part of this process.
Open the door and hold the glass firmly on both the inside and outside. Lift it slightly to release it from the frame.
Pull the old glass rope seal from the stove door.
Take the new rope seal and peel away part of the protective strip to expose the self adhesive layer. Start in the top left corner and press the seal into place. Carefully work around the corner of the door. Cut off any excess rope seal and press the end down firmly. Then run your hand along the entire seal and press it well.
Hold the new stove glass firmly on both sides, through the open door. Make sure the matt side faces the inside. Position the glass straight in the frame. Finally close the door and the glass and rope seal are successfully replaced.
