How to clean a wood burning stove

If you burn the right type of wood and operate your stove correctly, the maintenance of a Leenders wood burning stove is minimal. In this article, you will learn how to clean your log burner both inside and out.

How to clean the wood stove glass

Let us start with the stove glass. The best way to clean it is with a cloth or some kitchen paper and a small amount of ash from the stove. Avoid using cleaning products such as degreasers or vinegar. In principle, stove glass does not need to become dirty at all. You can read more about this in our article on cleaning stove glass.

Cleaning the inside of the wood burning stove

Inside the firebox, you only need to remove excess ash from time to time. Make sure to always leave a layer of around 0.80 inch (2 centimetres) to protect the firebricks and improve heat storage.

How to clean a wood burning stove exterior

You can clean the steel exterior with a damp cloth, although we advise not doing this too often.  We do not recommend using stove polish, such as black stove. The stone exterior is more difficult to clean, but you may gently try this with a slightly damp cloth as well.

In addition, the flue should be swept at least once a year to prevent creosote build-up. Do not do this yourself. Always have it carried out by a certified chimney sweep.
