Answers to frequently asked questions

What is a balanced flue and how does it work?

A wood burning stove is not only a source of atmosphere, but also a piece of technical ingenuity. An important part of that is the flue gas system. Our wood stove De Wald can be connected to a balanced flue system. In this article we explain what that is and how a balanced flue works.

What is a balanced flue?

In the context of a wood burning stove, it refers to the flue system. A balanced flue consists of two pipes, one inside the other. The inner pipe carries the flue gases outside, while the outer pipe supplies fresh air. This smart design makes it possible to draw combustion air from outdoors, without losing warm air from the home. The result is a sealed system, which benefits both the efficiency and the safety of the stove. Balanced flue is also called concentric flue.

Benefits of a balanced flue

With many stoves, air is taken from the room for combustion. This can cause negative pressure and draughts. A balanced flue prevents that. The outer pipe draws in fresh air from outside, after which the inner pipe safely channels the flue gases to the outside.

This system has several advantages:

  • Better combustion. Supplying oxygen from outside supports a more complete and cleaner burn. The fact that the incoming air is automatically preheated also helps the wood burn well and in a controlled way.
  • Higher efficiency. No heat loss due to air being drawn from the home.
  • No risk of flue gases spilling back into the living space.
  • Suitable for well insulated homes and for situations without a traditional chimney.
  • Required in many new builds. In many new build projects a sealed system is required, and a balanced flue meets that requirement.

As you might expect, Leenders is very positive about this technology.
