Answers to frequently asked questions

What is stove black polish and can I use it on my Leenders wood stove?

Stove black polish is still often used to freshen up wood stoves, but is that really a good idea? Especially with modern stoves such as those from Leenders, this traditional product can actually have the opposite effect. In this article, we explain what stove black polish is and why we advise against using it.

What is stove black polish and how does it work?

Stove black polish, also known as stove polish, is a heat-resistant paste or spray used to restore the appearance of cast-iron wood stoves and fireplaces. Its purpose is mainly cosmetic: it gives the stove a dark and even finish when the original colour has faded or become dull over time.
Stove black polish contains pigments and oils and is usually applied to a cold, cleaned stove. After rubbing and buffing, it forms a thin layer that cures during the first fire. Although it can give the metal a neat appearance, it does not provide long-term protection against rust or wear and needs to be reapplied periodically.

Why you shouldn’t use stove black polish on a Leenders wood stove

We strongly advise against using stove black polish on a Leenders wood stove. Our stoves are made from thick, high-quality steel that does not require any additional protective coating. This steel naturally offers sufficient resistance to heat and wear.
Using stove black polish can even cause unwanted discolouration, because the black tone of the product never fully matches the carefully selected finish of our stoves. With regular use, the polish will also discolour again, meaning you would need to apply it repeatedly. This is unnecessary maintenance that does not align with the durable character of a Leenders stove.

To clean the exterior of a Leenders wood stove, simply use a damp cloth. No extra coatings or polishing agents are needed.
